At Weiss Asset Management, we do things a little differently. We don’t believe in hierarchy. New hires will work alongside the founder and CIO and other senior staff. They are often assisted by interns. We encourage questions and discussions. If you want to hide in an office, this is not the firm for you. If you want to be intellectually challenged by extremely able coworkers, you will enjoy working for us.

Our team is a group of exceptionally intelligent high achievers, whose academic backgrounds include economics, engineering, mathematics, physics, political science, computer science and law. Many of our professionals have degrees in two or more of these fields, and have earned graduate degrees from leading universities including Stanford, Caltech, MIT and Harvard. They rarely have backgrounds in finance. We seek to hire exceptional individuals and train them ourselves.

The most successful people in the firm are not only brilliant but also creative. We are looking for people who will think of a risk we haven’t thought of and will find new areas in which we can profitably invest. Everyone is expected to treat their co-workers with respect, while at the same time engaging in vigorous (and at times heated) debate over issues affecting the firm’s investments and risk management.

All employees are encouraged to advance their skills. This typically happens through mentoring within the firm. Weiss Asset also pays for relevant courses at universities in Boston and Cambridge and brings in outside consultants to advise employees.
